Mermaid Subsea Services UKcommences North Sea decommissioning contract for major UK operator

Mermaid Subsea Services UK recently got the ball rolling on a decommissioning contract in the North Sea for a major UK-based operator, marking the latest milestone in the history of the rapidly growing company.

The contract involves the recovery of structures, concrete mattresses, grout and miscellaneous other debris, and further solidifies Mermaid’s growing reputation for decommissioning projects in the North Sea. Despite a slight delay due to adverse weather conditions, the Island Valiant supply vessel is set to depart Aberdeen in early March, with completion of the project expected in the first quarter of 2024.

Mermaid Subsea Services UK is the latest extension of a pedigreed and globally renowned company that has been a key-player in the industry for decades. Established in the UK in 2020, Mermaid specialises in a wide range of services, such as project management and engineering, diving, vessel operations, IRM, subsea construction, decommissioning and well plug and abandonment (P&A).

The company has a proven track record of enhancing project delivery, reducing overall risk and bolstering environmental sustainability for clients, and has solidified its position as a leader in vessel and diving services worldwide. The UK establishment serves as a testament to Mermaid’s continued expansion and commitment to providing exceptional services on a global scale.

Scott Cormack, Mermaid Regional Director expressed his satisfaction over this contract, stating:“It is great to be able to offer the Valiant to clients and to be working with the team at Island Offshore once again. It is a vessel with a robust track record, which is perfectly suited to the rigours of the  North Sea, and this project will set it up perfectly for what promises to be a busy few months.”

This campaign marks the beginning of an exciting year for the Valiant, which has already secured several other contracts for 2024. Despite the high demand, Mermaid still has some availability and flexibility for other clients starting from March.

In conjunction with the company’s highly skilled team of subsea experts, in-house project management and team of engineers, the Valiant is well equipped to handle a range of subsea tasks, using its fully integrated Work Class ROV, moonpool with 200t A-frame and 90t AHC crane. The vessel also boasts an extensive and successful track record in light construction, decommissioning, air diving and well P&A, which attests to its capabilities in navigating the challenges of North Sea operations.

Cormack emphasises: “This decommissioning project is yet another great landmark for us and we are thrilled that work will get underwayin earnest soon. Unsurprisingly there has been a great deal of interest from other companies looking to use the Valiant to support the delivery of their subsea projects, and while there is still some availability, it’s likely to go fast.”

As Mermaid’s project pipeline continues to expand, the company is preparing for a substantial growth period with plans to expand its Aberdeen headquarters in Westhill. They are actively recruiting new staff, with a specific focus on hiring a Procurement Officer and a Contract Engineer to support operations in the UK and Europe. Part of a broader expansion strategy, these plans align with the company’s vision to become a leading integrated subsea service provider, capable of meeting the demands of an ever-evolving subsea landscape.

Mermaid will be attending Global Underwater Hub’s Subsea Expo at the P&J Live in Aberdeen where senior staff members alongside Cormack will be available for meetings and catch-ups to discuss vessels such as the Valiant and how their in-house experts can provide you with the complete solution. Cormack commented: “We are really looking forward to seeing clients old and new at this year's event. It’s a brilliant opportunity for representatives and stakeholders from all parts of the North Sea to get together and discuss the challenges and opportunities that we face as an industry.”

Looking ahead, Mermaid is poised for continued success as it takes on more projects, strengthens its position in the market, and expands its capabilities and workforce. With several engineering and decommissioning projects lined up for the rest of the year, the company is well-positioned to navigate the ever-changing subsea landscape and contribute to the growth and development of the industry.
